11/6/25 – Stump Sprouts X-Country Ski Area, Hawley MA

We’ve been hoping to get back to Stump Sprouts for quite a long time, and today we finally got there. At its 2000 ft rustic elevation it offers cross country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, and a long view into Vermont at the end of the Lone Boulder trail. We started out on a trail new to Continue reading

10/30/25 – The Boulder Trails, Goshen MA

Rain was falling, but it was forecast to be “intermittent” so our hike in Goshen got a “yeh” vote. We were all so happy that we hadn’t called it off as we had a totally delightful 2.9 miles through this magic land of glacial erratics . Good dog Jax (on a very long leash) loved Continue reading

10/23/25 – Clary Trails, Williamsburg MA

2.5 miles on beautiful hiking trails with perfect late October weather. Tom noticed a porcupine way up in a tree and we enjoyed watching it do nothing (as they seem to like doing best!) for a while. An unusual field of hickory trees with a long view and lots of interesting stones: some with mica Continue reading

10/16/25 – Bright Water Bog, Leverett, MA

A perfectly wonderful day with temperature in the 50s, breezy, and clear skies. Half of the hike was on quiet upland trails through beautiful forest and then we dropped down to the lake trails. About 2 miles in all. All these photos were taken once we got down to the waters. That’s Winter Berry and Continue reading

10/9/2025 Podick Swamp Conservation Area, Sunderland, MA

There was a hint of colder weather as we set out this morning on 2 miles of flat, easy, very pretty trails with lots of towering trees and lots of dappled shade. When the sun came through, it was really v beautiful. Because it once was a swanp, there was a place where the trail Continue reading

  • 9/18/25 – Buckland MA

    9/18/25 – Buckland MA

What a wonderful hike we had today. My Apple Watch reports that I climbed 21 flights of stairs – but really it wasn’t stairs at all, just steep trails leading eventually to the 1797 birthplace of Mary Lyon, founder of what now is Mount Holyoke College. We’ve hiked here before, but in winter and on Continue reading

9/11/25 – DAR State Forest, Goshen, MA

A long stretch of beautiful New England weather continued for our hike today. We started out at the fire tower which most of us could remember climbing to its top. But that was 12 years ago, and today we just shared good memories of that climb and then started out on our 3.27 mile hike Continue reading

    8/14/25 – Burnt Hill Trail, Heath.MA

80 degrees, but OK in the shade of the forest and, for Deb’s dog Livvy, in small watering holes and streams. Some inviting boulders for climbing on where I got my photo taken leaning on big tree. The climb to the “summit” was steep, very rocky, challenging, and fun. We had our bag lunches up Continue reading

7/31/25 – Lake Fitzgerald Trails, Northampton MA

Today was a day of discoveries that ended with heavy rain. Nancy found a black plastic garbage bag in her pack and a raincoat was quickly fashioned for me! (Others had remembered to bring rain gear:) Never have we seen the orchid “Rattlesnake Plantain” in such healthy profusion and in early, full bloom. Also lots Continue reading
