Est. 2013

June 13, 2013

At Chesterfield Gorge, another Trustees of Reservations property.It’s an exciting place.
I took this photo, then the battery went dead. Darn. On the left of the photo you’ll see the remains of one side of a bridge on the “Military Highway” built with “Goshen Stone”. Goshen Stone is still used and in great demand today. The bridge was built before the revolutionary war by “Americans” . It spanned the east branch of the Westfield River. General Burgogne (sp?) and his 7000 troops crossed it on the march back to Boston after their surprising defeat by the revolutionary militia at Saratoga. It’s also possible that the canon that were “dragged” from Fort Ticonderoga, NY, to Boston in secrecy (!) and installed at the high ground at Boston might have also used this bridge. Of course that was quite an unbelievable feat, resulting in the British being taken by surprise and routed from Boston. They fled to New York.
Too much of a history lesson history today. The natural sights were really really wonderful. The rain fell, but we lasted for 2 hours then were glad to return to the dry insides of our cars! Wish you could have seen it all. Penny {CAPTION}
