The weather was nippy and breezy for our 4 1/2 mile hike on Balancing Rock Trail in Williamsburg, a side shoot of the HenHawk Trail. The steady climb got us warmed up and the sighting of lots of signs of moose – droppings and bark eaten off the trees- delighted us. There are lots of moose up there. Color from the beeches and red maples made for great scenery along the trail. We posed for photos once we reached balancing rock, a glacial erratic that is said to have been left there 10,000 years ago. Once again we celebrated a dog birthday. This time it was for Sukee, Tony’s German Shepherd’s big day. Dog biscuits were presented to our two loyal and great trail bosses. A view into the Pioneer Valley opened up and we could actually see the towers at UMass, Amherst. Too bad that he sun has bleached them out of the photo. The downhill portion of the hike was lovely, great rock outcroppings and an old logging road to walk on for a lot of the time. Then off to Williamsburg Inn for the $5.00 lunch bargain and lots of good fun together. Deb, who has had surgery on her shoulder met us there sporting her high tech new sling. She’ll be off the trails for 6 months alas. Thinking of you all, Love, Penny
