We met at 9 at the newly restored Conway Pond and carpooled up to the wooded start of what was once Field Hill Road. It’s a road named for Marshall Field, an enterprising farm boy in Conway who went on the found Marshall Field Department Store in Chicago. Marshall FIeld also left us a wonderful marble library here in town, in memory of his parents.
Tony had masterminded the hike, got private landowners to let us hike through, cleared a lot of the old road that had been seriously overgrown, and gave us great history lessons along the way (donned in his colorful and noteworthy Hawaiian shirt!). He got many thanks for his great efforts.
Dog hiker Sukee, as ever, found every watering hole she could for a swim, and we all stopped to be amazed at a huge old mill site with wonderful stone foundations etc. and a heron nesting in the distance. As we were about to cross a seriously old stone bridge, Joe found an old sign that let us know the bridge was unsafe. So we all laughed and crossed it anyway.
Then on to some of Conway’s beautiful views across distant pasture land and 3 hours later we emerged back down at the Conway pond where we had an all American picnic of hotdogs (cooked on the new grills at the pond) potato salad, bean broccoli and cabbage salad, plums, clementines, sweet potato chips, lemonade, watermelon, and a homemade cake. I’m third on the left at the table, mighty hungry and happy. It was all just wonderful. Then! At last, we swam!!! No photos of that, as I was in the pond, but it sure was so so much fun. Come to Conway, Much Love, Penny
