9/11/14 – Deb’s land in Ashfield

Deb put a chunk of her land in Conservation Restriction. We’ve been helping her improve and develop trails on the rest…. maybe 80 acres. The land is wonderful: streams, glacial erratics, mixed wood forest, with the remnants of a Revolutionary Military Road running through it. Today we all brought loppers, saws, and pruners, and continued clearing trails. Rusted cans found in the woods were used as drums as we marched along singing “The Caissons are Rolling ALong” when we got to the Military Road. Trees were cut and trails were marked. Deb has already found 3 valuable pre Revolutionary coins along the way. And an old spoon which she’s used to “set a table” along with a flat rock “dish” and a log centerpiece. See photo of Baxter up on that “table”. A cloudburst had us scrambling for rain gear. We weathered the storm in an old cellar hole listening to Lynn play a tune on her Indian pipes. Hours later back at Deb’s beautiful house we dined pot luck style on: a SIlver Palate cookbook recipe tuna salad, grain bread made with local wheat, fruit salad with local organic yogurt, chicken salad, tortellini with pesto, and iced tea. Dessert was apple crisp (yep, local apples), blueberry cookies (local berries). AND, as it was Annie’s birthday, all the dogs got desserts of chicken and brown rice topped off with a milkbone. Good news” Kit joined us for lunch . He’s been ill and can’t hike for a while. We were so glad to have him with us for lunch. Enjoy these tantalizing late summer days, Penny
