Rocks! Professor Rick Little (tweed baseball cap) joined us today and we had absolutely great lectures on …rocks! The second photo shows a quartz intrusion as it flowed through granite before cooling. We were looking at 300 million year old rocks and glacial impacts from 16 thousand years ago. I’m quite fired up to learn lots more. There’s a rough granite intrusion in third photo, over our heads, it’s a “sill” intrusion if I remember my lessons correctly. There was a ton to marvel at and we all had a lively time exploring the irregular trails and tight spots in the rocks. The dogs might not have gotten too much out of it though. They often jumped up on the rocks Prof Little was explaining and, when bored, resumed their tug of war stick games. Lunch at the Williamsburg Inn followed. Lots of rock talk along with the $5.00 turkey dinner – a hiker favorite. If you noticed all those tubes in the first photo, they’re sap lines for maple sugaring season, left up all year in many places now. We actually came upon a rusting heap of metal sap boiler equipment and rusting metal sap buckets in the woods. We’re all sorry to see them being phased out. Maybe some snow tonight! Keep warm, Penny
