3/5/15 – “Old Colonial Potash Road” Hawley MA

Cars were spotted at beginning and end of this incredibly good trail, the “Old Colonial Potash Road” where 525 acres of Singing Brook Farm have recently been put under conservation restriction by Franklin Land Trust. The hike started out from the parking lot at Hawley Bog, which looks mighty different under all that snow. We’re used to going there to see the native bog orchids in summer.
Perfect snowshoe conditions once again; at least there’s that to say for this long, cold, deep winter. I couldn’t resist having my photo taken at Pudding Hollow Road where the cars were parked, and our very fine 2 hour hike ended. Sukee had her taken as she boarded the Honda full of snowshoes and spikes.
But the fun for us didn’t end there for as we headed to Berkshire East Ski Area for lunch. Wow, did it bring back great memories. We were excited to see Polly Bartlett, intrepid 80+ year old outdoorswoman, who was there for a day of skiing. Tony showed her the traii map of where we’d hiked -perhaps the only trail in the area that Polly didn’t know!
Last photo shows a map we noticed on the way out. Find Riddell Road (Madge find your house) . To the right of where it says Riddell Road, the lighter color area is the hayfield I still own. Just above it, and over to the right, you’ll see blue dash markings for mountain bike trails, also on my property. Find The Druid Ridge Trail! It’s very well known to us as we love to hike there, and I’ve begun to plant and reestablish native wildflowers . Trailing Arbutus, Saxifrage, and Trillium have survived the planting. Best of all, for me, is the native stand of Pyrola which is trhiving. I’d love to show it to you. I’m heading for a cup of tea. Wish you were here. Love, Penny
