We were climbing today! The snow is still perfect, but after we left the brief snowmobile trails we broke new trails for about 2 hours, taking turns of course. It was strenuous but exceedingly wonderful. Temperature around 35, winds at about 20-25 mph. Maybe our last real winter hike for the year. First photo is of interesting animal tracks coming down a hill to a stream. Evidence of porcupines all day, maybe it was one? Or … ?
As this is one of our all season favorite hikes, we posed by our “signature” tree. And there we shared the Organic “Take a Hike” trail mix that Tara had sent. Tara, we hope you’ll tell the merchant on Columbus Avenue that it was totally loved here in the Western MA hills. We will head to the city and give a testimonial if he/she wishes (expenses paid we hope). Were those Goji berries? Many thanks from the Thursday hikers, Tara.
At one point we decided to push on father in the hopes of a great view. Lynn opted out because of a tricky knee but when we returned we found her posing for the centerfold of next year’s hiking calendar!
Going back down seemed easy and fun – we wished we all had sleds! The snow was fast! Lissa took the time to fashion herself a new hat from a piece of birch bark she found on the ground. We agreed it was “tres stylish and muy fashionable”.
And thats it for today’s hike. 12 miles of muddy roads got us back to Elmer’s Store in Ashfield where I had a big bowl of chicken noodle soup and others opted for Raysadilla’s (an Elmer’s favorite) and marvelous assorted sandwiches.
Signs of Spring are, even with all the snow, emerging. Even the Bluebirds are getting cheeky.! Love, Penny
