What a beautiful “in between seasons” day today. We needed spikes because of a lot of icy climbs on snowmobile trails that were partway down to leaves and earth, part corn snow, and part ice. We were in lots of open fields with climbs in wooded areas. The trail followed the California to Boston underground Cable Route, still under there but no longer used(?) due to fiber optics. (You might want to check that information.) We found a pretty nifty shack atop a ridge so now we have another candidate for Thursday Hikers Clubhouse, although everyone today agreed that Madge’s “leaning shed” in Charlemont is our favorite. There is a great swamp that covers a quite a bit of acreage. Tony spotted several heron nests, then two blue herons in one nest way atop a tree snag! We had brought binoculars and spent quite some time watching the two herons . Spectacular! Even with the zoom on my camera I couldn’t get a very good photo, but I’ve included a generic photo of another part of the swamp. As we neared our cars, we passed the back side of the Williamsburg dump where a really neat structure had been built out of scrapped materials. It looked rather “move in” to me! Hike ended. I rode in the “dog mobile” (3 humans and 3 canines) to the Snack Shop (another hiker favorite), where genuine Lobster rolls are featured. But today I had a cup of lobster bisque which was first rate and a BLT. Other lunches included NE Clam Chowder, Caesar salad chicken wraps, veggie burgers etc. and great pitchers of ice water. Winter is losing its grip. Enjoy the new weather, I sure am. Best, Penny
