Hill Town Landtrust has acquired 600 acres in Huntington by gift of a Mr. Stevens. It’s listed as “moderately steep” and the trails are pretty well marked. It’s our first time there and we are already planning to return in spring for the wildflowers that must be there. It was extraordinarily rocky – as if a glacier went through and dropped all the rocks in its arsenal. Great fun, icy, but with cleats and hiking poles it was a dream of a hike . A pileated woodpecker warned us with a huge exclamation point that the trail ahead was …icy? rocky? A small rock almost hidden by snow ice displayed rose quartz. Moose and bear tracks were all over, all day long. Tony was caught “slacking” on a nice little rock seat along a stretch of trail. We extended the hike so we could get to the summit of Mt. Pisgah where we expected long views. But there were only more trees and a big pile of rocks. (Some said they were “Pisgahed off” by the disappointment at the top.) But what a great day, full of laughing and climbing and descending and keeping warm. We had lunch at the Lookout where I had Butternut/apple/sausage soup, Tony had the “John Wayne” sandwich special, Lissa chose Pea soup with ham, lots of other good sandwiches, water, and good conversation. Keeping warm I hope? Best, Penny
