Kestral Land Trust and Leverett Trails Committee have conserved, and are keeping up, this wonderful acreage. As it is St. Patrick’s Day today we gave the appropriate “Top o’ the Morning” greeting to one another, then got on our way in search of anything green. Nesting geese gave us a hard time so we moved on and in no time were treated to whole wheat Irish Soda bread made by Lissa and a bit of chocolate mint in bright green wrappers. Green Skunk Cabbage was just coming up and we were excited to see it. The mosses had greened up and seemed to be everywhere. Lissa had a close up look at some lichens on rock, but it rather looked as if she were kissing the Blarney Stone. The water was never out of sight or earshot, the streams swollen and running fast. As well the birds were calling and it was all marvelous to be there in the woods today. At last we found Pussy Willows and that really did thrill us. A bevy (?) of snakes just emerging from winter enthralled us for a little while … until we moved on! After 3 hours or more we found our cars, sorry to have the hike over, and headed to “Bread and Butter” for lunch. They were totally crowded so we walked across to Atkins Farm (in Leverett) where I had 2 Kale Pot Stickers and a slice of layered vegetable rollup, both heated. We ate outside and just beat the threatening dark clouds that were with us all the way home – where it started to rain hard. Another great day, Love, Penny
