8/4/16 – Devil’s Den/Breckenridge Trail, Williamsburg MA

This was long hiking day with good weather, good trails with plenty of rises and downs, dense forest, many streams to cross, and with the great reward of having our bag lunches at the Devil’s Den ravine with the beautiful east branch of the Mill River below us. It was a day when the beauty of the place was tangibly inspiring. We (men and women!) sang rounds – mostly those learned at Girl Scout Camp and hiking songs too. Lynn (a professional musician) played haunting melodies on two different Native American flutes she’d brought with her. Her soft notes mixed with the bird song way up on the canopy, and then with the sounds of the streams and the river. It was a great day for being alive.
The old bronze plaque reads: “This tract of land in Williamsburg is given to troop 701 Boy Scouts of America by Louis H. and Ada M. Cranson and Lyndal Cranson Denison 1945”. The plaque is on a big boulder in an obscure part of the woods (the land was probably quite open in 1945) and it was a real pleasure to have seen it.
Next week we’ll be at Chapel Falls for our annual plunge into its good waters. But for now, I’m heading to the Conway Pond for my afternoon swim. Bye. Love, Penny{CAPTION}
