8/18/16 – Conway State Forest and the Conway Pond

Today’s 3 hour hike down through the mature trees and pine needle covered trails in the Conway State Forest to the Conway Pond was near perfection. Great summer weather, and with lots of interesting things along the way. We quietly explored a pre Revolutionary War cemetery and later hiked over a 1700s stone bridge (Conway was settled in 1780) and down to the stream below so we could have a look at the bridge construction. It’s partially collapsed, but the lintel formation had us marveling at it and wondering about its builders. Might they be in that old cemetery?
At the pond we set out our picnic potluck lunch of potato salad, pasta salad, popcorn, veggies, watermelon, deviled eggs, seltzer and iced tea and got the hamburgers and hot dogs going on the grill. All the while going in and out of the pond for swims. The lunch ended with hand cranked vanilla ice cream and it was delicious (with fresh strawberries and blueberries for toppings). The rest of the afternoon was spent swimming. It was really a great day – but with no photos of the swimming as it’s impossible to take photos and swim at the same time, and we were swimming for a good part of the rest of the day. August is flying by and the full moon is a beautiful sight to see. Love,
