It was absolutely exhilarating to get out on such terrific trails on this sunny, frosty day. The fungi are popping up all over and we admired – and tasted a Bolete – as we went. Fortunately we hike with a naturalist, Nancy, so we always learn so much and even get to experiment along the way too. (And everyone is still alive.) It wasn’t long before our jackets, hats, and backpacks were decorated with colorful leaves. We weren’t exactly camouflaged, but we did blend in with the colors around us. We band of friends had fun and nonsense today, and how lucky we are for it – and for each other. The dogs engaged in tug of wars with big sticks while Nancy dissected the Bolete Mushroom and we, well, we ….. paid attention! Tony found a dead birch branch with a monocle attached and got quite aristocratic with it. We delighted in finding a rusting Diamond T truck by the side of one trail. It had crank handles for opening the windshield windows!! Once back down from the steep trails we had our bag lunches on the adirondack chairs at the lodge and looked out at, and were thankful for, the mountains in the distance. October is wonderful. I’m sure you must agree. Love, Penny
