Thursday Hikers

Est. 2013

12/1/16 – Lawrence Swamp, South Amherst, MA

It had rained for three days, but the sun came out this morning so we could hike. And it was wonderful hiking weather. Lawrence Swamp has lots of trails, and lots of hunters, so we flaunted our orange vests and hats. This was a really different hike as it was pretty much all flat land. And swampy! And interesting, as it is densely wooded, yet surrounded by agricultural fields. We were interested in the Swamp White Oak, and if anyone knows what the horizontal “chipped rings” around the trunks are, please advise. Our hiker botanist said that it’s uncertain what that is. (Photo in report). At the edge of one field we got a great view of Long Mountain, a favorite hiking mountain for us. How beautiful it looked from ground level. We stopped at a teepee-like structure where we shared sesame sticks and organic “Chunks of Energy” snacks. We picked up the the Robert Frost for the last 1.7 miles of the hike, found our cars, then on to Atkins Market where we bought lunch! No brown bags today. We celebrated Tom’s birthday with a card featuring a very strange looking frog (suitable for the herpetologist that he is) and an apple blueberry crisp that Lissa had made. Welcome December! Love to all, Penny {CAPTION}
