5/4/17 – Bear Swamp, Ashfield MA

Once again I used a borrowed camera and I cannot get the photos to load into my computer. Darn it!!!! I took so many photos of so many wonderful things – including the hikers themselves. I WILL buy myself a camera soon.
Today’s hike could easily be called “The Hike of the Year” as it’s our annual trek to the amazing profusion of wildflowers at Bear Swamp. So, no photos but here’s the list of them that I can remember. : Clintonia, Spring Beauty, Squirrel Corn, Dutchman’s Breeches, Herb Robert, Sweet Cicely, Toothwort, Ramps, Blue Cohosh, Miterwort, Meadow Rue, Tiarella, Painted Trillium, Red Trillium, Red Elderberry, True and False Soloman’s Seal, Dwarf Ginseng, Virginia Waterleaf, Wild Lettuce, Baneberry, Rock Tripe, Ferns (I won’t name them all), Wild Oats (Bellwort),Bloodroot, Sarsaparilla, Early (fragrant) white violet, Canada violet, small yellow violet, other violets and Wild Ginger. And I’m probably leaving out some other wonderful things.
Also some ducks and turtles and the song of a black and white warbler. And we had a nice chat a gentleman out birding at a spot in Bear Swamp where he sits on a particularly high rock outcrop and watches birds (as he has for the last 50 years!!!)
So that’s it for today. It’s May! Hooray! Love, Penny
