Lovely, lovely, lovely hike on the Pocumtuck Ridge with beautiful long views of the Pioneer Valley all the way over to Conway itself. With binoculars we were to able identify Conway’s Totman Farm as well as many other places well known to us all down in the valley. There are always so many things that interest me “close up”, including today a tiny pink lichen and the abstract form of a lichen on the sandstone conglomerate that makes up the Pocumtuc\k Ridge. Lunch was at rickety old picnic table that, although creaky, offered splendid views to the west. As there was no running water in streams or even any ponds, the dogs took advantage of any puddle in the trail, and also begged (and got!) water from our drinking bottles. We got to see a lovely, fragrant native rose, and some blue harebells blooming on “hardscrabble” at one at the long views. (Remember those roses in Montana, Phil, Ellie, and GInni?) We looked down on Deerfield Academy, soon after which I found a dead Luna Moth (which is now a part of my insect collection here on Pleasant Street). I’m hoping! and planning! to draw it and use some watercolor to see if I might capture it’s unique, beautiful color. At last we came to the top of the ski lift at Eaglebrook School where I thought of Paul Joseph and hoped he had many many happy runs down its slopes. As we drove down from the ski area, we all hoped to see Anna coming out from work but she eluded us. I’m real proud of Anna and her good work at Eaglebrook School kitchen. Only one more day in June!!! “Summer is a flying by”. Love, Penny
