7/20/17 – Keystone Arch Bridges Trail, Chester MA

A one hour drive from Conway took us to our meeting place in Chester MA at very funky Cam’s Restaurant (once a gas station) and from there we drove to the trailhead of Keystone Arch Bridges Trail. Google it and you’ll read some marvelous USA history of the westward movement by rail in the 1840s. Irish immigrant labor did most of the work and got $1 a day for their efforts. (If you happen to have Irish roots, be proud!!) The feats of engineering in this railroad push to the west is amazing and very very interesting. The scenery is gorgeous. At least one of the bridges is still in use! At one point we had to emerge and walk along the rail tracks and musician Lynn beat our a catchy rhythm on some metal track debris that got us all singing. Ah! So much fun. This was hiker, and engineer, Conrad’s first visit to these trails and he took some risky moves looking over the edge to see the construction. Hiking down to the base of one of the bridges was rewarding and breathtaking, although Tom took a nasty head over heels spill on the way up that required our first aid attention. After 4 hours of hiking we got back to our cars and headed to the Huntington General Store for ice cream cones. Then back to Conway for a plunge in the wonderful waters of the Conway Pond. Wow did that feel great! Lots and lots of love to all of you, Penny {CAPTION}
