Thursday Hikers

Est. 2013

9/14/17 – The Dubuque State Forest, Hawley MA

Today was a perfect late summer, early Autumn day, for hiking. The fungi, such as these intensely small deep orange ones and a single “Dead Man’s Finger” are showy just now. The trails were mostly single file trails with plenty of roots and rocks to climb over. We noticed two trees committed to living really close together. Joe Zadroga performed some athletic feats between two tall rocks and later on he – and all of us! – couldn’t believe the very very high rail on the new bridge over Basin Brook. It was rather comical and we were at a loss to imagine why such a high rail was installed. But we sure were happy for the new bridge, as later on we’d have to cross Basin Brook twice more without any bridge but with plenty of slippery rocks. We hiked for nearly 4 hours and were happy to get back to the picnic tables at Hallockville Lake where we wolfed down our bag lunches with lots of cherry tomatoes, sweet potato chips, sesame sticks, and apple slices for sharing. With hopes for Karen that cleanup and fix up are gong well in Florida, and for the rest of you that you’re enjoying this September weather. Love, Penny {CAPTION}
