A spectacular day and hike with two very special guests: Donna’s son Nate, who’s an avid hiker here from California, and his son, Lincoln, 21 months old. Lincoln was wonderful for all 3 hours of the hike!!! With our help, he could call out “Yellow marker, Red marker, Blue marker, Green marker” to help keep us on the right trails. Rattle Snake Gutter has spectacular rock formations and wonderful upper trails that loop around and are just so interesting and fun. Geological heaven.
At a high lookout we were able to see – through the low clouds and distance- the Peace Pagoda of Leverett. The clouds opened up for a good, although still obscure view, while we watched in amazement and then when we started to leave, it clouded over again. We attributed that peek of beauty to our friend “The Thursday Hiker God” who always seems to gift us. I’ve included a photo of the gang quite amazed and gawking (and fooling around) at our luck in spotting the Pagoda. Tony and Sukee commandeered a bench with a view and Sukee took advantage of any pool of water where she could find a drink.
Lastly, that’s Grandma Donna with her boys and the Thursday hikers dining out at Cushmans Cafe in Amherst “apres” hike. I had the ZIpperello Panini. Tasty!
For all the fun we had, we were also carrying the sadness of the great loss of Elizabeth Farnsworth, Botanist, Artist, Musician, extraordinarily beautiful woman. She died last Friday of a heart attack and a fall down a flight of stairs. We will never forget her. Well, “That’s All Folks”, Love, Penny
