Thursday Hikers

Est. 2013

11/9/17 – Wendell State Forest, Wickett PondTrail

On such frosty morning I dashed out of the house forgetting my hiking boots!!! – so I had to hike in summer slip ons. Egads. Only once did the muck suck one shoe off my foot. Nancy retrieved it from 6” of black mud. Nothing to do but keep on going and it actually wasn’t so bad because the trail is almost totally flat although very rocky…..and WET. Once home, I put on dry socks and slippers,sat by the wood stove, and all’s well again.. Frost lightly coated and outlined things on the ground; small puddles were covered with thin ice. Our destination was a cranberry bog where we picked regular size cranberries! Same size as “Ocean Spray” brand cranberries! They were there for the picking. I’m going to make some cranberry muffins to share with the hikers. The red winterberries are ripe, and so decorative. I loved the way they looked with the lake behind them. We came upon another small hiking group and they took our photo in front of a gnarly old fallen tree. By the end of the hike, the lake was looking very cold and beautiful as the sun began to be lower in the sky. Off to the Wagon Wheel Restaurant where the food is wonderful, and all made right there. I had the homemade Spicy Bean Burger with lettuce, avocado, tomato, a side of slaw, and a big glass of water. Yum Yum. WInter’s a’comin. Love, Penny {CAPTION}
