Thursday Hikers

Est. 2013

2/1/18 – Greenwood Trail, Dubuque State Forest, Hawley MA

2 inches of freshly fallen snow decorated the forest. The trail is new, and will be a mountain bike trail, so it has many twists and turns but is on relatively flat land. Sukee, our trail boss dog, was hiking with us again after a hiatus due to a growth that was removed from her back foot. She is doing just fine now.
We managed to slip past a prehistoric doglike creature that was partially blocking the trail. Branches had fallen on it so it wasn’t very mobile:)
Good cheer ruled and, to put it simply, we had a wonderful day even with slick ice beneath the new snow cover. We all wore spikes, but even with them it was treacherous in places.
The hike ended at an 1800s charcoal kiln that we’ve visited on other hikes. How on earth did they construct it without modern tools and such? It just does amaze me. We caught snowflakes that were falling through its top opening on our tongues. There ’s always time for silliness on the Thursday hikes!
Lunch was at Elmer’s Store in Ashfield. It’s changed a lot, sandwiches have become expensive, and my grilled ham and cheese on rye was neither grilled, nor on rye, not did it have more than a suggestion of cheese. DIsappointing, because we do love Elmer’s. The pitchers of ice water are still icy and cold and get refilled, so we’ll be back.
Happy February First! With love from Penny
