Thursday Hikers

2/15/18 – Notchview Cross Country Ski Area, Windsor MA

With the temperature risen to 42 degrees, we set out on icy trails that had good snow cover. Spikes were chosen over snowshoes and were perfect for the trail conditions. Notchview “Hume” Trail is always beautiful in winter. It winds along a fast flowing stream and through a Spruce forest. Ice formations in the stream are always dazzling. The challenging wooden bridge is still there, and once again we all made it safely across. We wonder if it will get “fixed”, although that just might take the fun and dare out of crossing it. A lichen on a yellow birch had us guessing if it was a beaver hieroglyph or perhaps a fish. Maybe you even see something else? Once out of the forested area there’s a delightful climb up to a large meadow where we meandered and just enjoyed being together. Although premature, there are signs of Spring that, as it’s only February 15, we are trying not to notice. However, the maple sap gatherers have been setting their taps all across the Valley and even up into the Conway hills. Engineer hiker Conrad found geometry up in the trees. Lunch at The Creamery. I had a BLT on Honey Millet Bread – the Thursday just baked bread of the day and very delicious indeed!!! I hope that you all had some chocolate, maybe even some roses, yesterday.
