5/3/2018 – Rattlesnake Knob Trail in the Holyoke Range

This 4.2 mile “in and out” hike to Rattlesnake Knob, in wonderful Spring weather, was an up hill hike on the way in and -thank heaven! – a down hill hike on the way out. Having hiked in Rowe yesterday I am quite ready to hang up my hiking shoes for a few days. Once at the top, we just “hung out” watching insects, moths, long views, wildflowers, and just enjoyed being together. The new wildflower of the day was a white rue anemone (photo) in bloom. After the hike we went to Atkins Farm for lunch – some bagged and some bought. I bought a BLT on sourdough toast and some lemonade. We ate outside on picnic tables. Then off to Amherst College Berneski Museum of Natural History for a talk on “The 5 Extinctions” (and into the sixth extinction that’s going on now). The presenter was a woman, Amherst College senior about to graduate, who had once done intern work at New York’s Museum of Natural History. She had constructed the exhibit and talk. It was encouraging to see such a fine young person in action. We all think about, talk about, and both admire and are excited by Chip’s progress as he hikes that long Appalachian Trail. Hike on, Chip! Love, Penny {CAPTION}
