7/12/18 – Mt. Tom Reservation, Metacomet-Monadnock Trail

(I’m slipping in a photo of last night’s double rainbow that was right here in Conway.) The hike today was a climb to remains of the the Eeryie House on Mt Nonotuck. It was steep enough, and had me thinking of Chip out on the AT, and WOW he is my hero! Early on we spotted a handsome toad. I used to often see them in my gardens.
The only wildflower today was the Spotted WIntergreen and it was in full wonderful bloom!! What a wondrous beauty it is. We took a side trail in order to see a view across The Valley. It was short of breathtaking, but incredibly interesting.
The Eeryie House ruins had me thinking of the Ireland trip coming up next summer! (Any of you Daleys signing up??) The Eerie House was active in the 1870s, a mountain destination for visitors wanting to take the “good air”. It was very prosperous. The stable could house 40 horses. Folks arrived in horse and carriage, dining and lodging in splendor. It came to a sad end one night as the proprietor discovered two dead horses in the stable, set about to cremate them, and, well, burned down the entire place!!! You can google it if interested. Back down, down, down, to a picnic table, hungry hikers, bag lunches, and some wonderful children who couldn’t get enough of petting Tony’s dog, Sukee. Hoping all’s well and that you’re having a beautiful summer. Penny {CAPTION}
