Thursday Hikers

8/9/18 – “Potato Hole Cave”

The rain brought out the fungi! today. We saw all kinds. The find of the day was the Caesar Mushroom, first photo. It’s said that Julius Caesar ate a lot of them. Whether he did or he didn’t, I am always excited to find this amazing mushroom. I’m including other mushroom photos, and hope you find them interesting. Sorry to say, but I had to leave a lot of mushroom photos out.
Our hike destination was to an underground stone structure of unknown purpose. You could easily pass it by and miss it’s small overgrown entrance. It’s rarely visited as it’s way off trail. It’s been dubbed “The Potato Hole” as some think it might have once been a root cellar. Others claim it was built by a Native Americans. We went in two at a time, with flashlights, and oddly enough it wasn’t all that spooky in there. Occasionally, historical organizations give these structures some scrutiny. I’d love to find out what it actually was. It was well b\built, that’s for sure.
Botanist and Thursday hiker Nancy collected a big bag of huge Bolete mushrooms, hopefully they were “King Boletes”. She’s probably eating them right now.
After the hike, and after treating Tony for the stings he received when he stumbled into a ground bee nest, we all went back to Gwen’s lovely log home for some swimming in her in ground pool. Once back in Conway, Madge, Tony and I headed to the Conway Pond for our daily late afternoon swim. Ahh. The water was wonderful….. it always is. Stay cool, Penny {CAPTION}
