Nancy, Ted Watt, and Lissa explored these UNBLAZED trails 6 times, using a GPS for help, before we set out today. There are lots of switchbacks and lots of side trails to get lost on,,, and people often do. At the start of our adventure we hiked past a basalt quarry that was once a very tall mountain, and then on to a high, overgrown earthen mound that was constructed for trolley traffic in the late 1800s. Healthy Round-leaved Pyrola and Spotted Wintergreen were thriving atop the old, overgrown trolly bed. Quickly leaving all traces of civilization behind, we set out on a great hike that was full of adventure. The trail is narrow and rocky and rather like a roller coaster in its ups and downs. We were high enough that there were no places for the dogs to find water so we took several water breaks for them (and for us too!). Tony found a bit of root that looked like a “corkscrew” and I collected some wild Indigo seeds to try and grow. We had lunch at Atkins Farm, came back to Conway and had a good swim at the Conway Pond followed by a therapeutic soak in Tony’s hot tub. My oh my! What a great day! And Three Cheers for Claudia who started first grade today! XO Penny
