Today was a perfect day to be out in the woods with friends. Temperature near 50 degrees, no wind, no snow, no ice, no muddy trails either. The vernal pools are still mostly frozen over, but look hopeful. A wonderful basalt boulder was tempting enough for us to climb up on it and just … well, just sit there! Good too was being at one of our favorite places: the “summit” of Mt. Warner. Usually we plant a political flag or message there, but today we just gathered with our collective good memories. The cement footings of an old fire tower are still there. Then off to the long view with Mt. Monandock in the distance as well the Connecticul River and a much expanded orchard on the hillside. Many new young trees showed recent grafting.
Of course the REAL reason for going to Mt Warner today: Lunch at the Hadley Sugar Shack to celebrate sugaring season. We had all kinds of pancakes: buckwheat or buttermilk, with bacon and/or sausage, with or without blueberries (but who’s silly enough to leave off the blueberries?), coffee (with free refills), lots of water. and LOTS and LOTS of freshly made maple syrup. It was a great day to be in New England, I bet it’s great where you are too. Love, Penny
