8/4/22 – The DeGeorges trails in Charlemont MA

Still have about 70 wonderful acres in Charlemont. Although weather prediction was for 100 degrees we knew that once in the woods we’d have breezes and low heat. We hiked for 2.9 miles very comfortably, a nice long climb to an open area at first, then along the top of a stony ridge, then onto some really good trails and at last down behind Madge’s house for bag lunches. . We did have a game of “Stump the Engineer” when we found a section of drain pipe sunk beside a tree and challenged Engineer Conrad to explain it. He wen uphill a bit and of course found a spring. We also confirmed the final “draft” for Tony’s memorial stone that will be installed at the Conway Pond. Then we drove back to Conway where we jumped into the pond and swam and talked and even spent time with the new folks who bought Tony’s house. They already feel like friends! A handsome couple from San Francisco with 4 children who want to have a cow!! They surely have the barns and fields for more than just 1 cow. They have repeatedly invited us to continue to hike their land. It’s wonderful! Tony would be delighted with it all. But nothing will ever stop us from missing him. (The plant pictured rather poorly is a Helleborine, wild orchid, alien, not much valued, but I love it anyway. Here’s wishing you all a day or two of good old fashioned rain. Pennyl{CAPTION}
