Thursday Hikers

Est. 2013

10/19/23 – Leverett MA

The day started out with dense fog but when it lifted the day was a quintessential October day. We couldn’t have asked for more: 62degrees, full sun shining down through the forest canopy, and lots and lots of fungi- including our favorite!: “Dead Man’s Fingers” (photo 6, look for the black “fingers” coming up through the leaves), oyster mushrooms, and LOTS more. The terrain there is gorgeous: narrow little ascending trails, wide fast running streams. wooden bridges to cross, a “ghost” fern, and much more. Lissa was out ahead when she spotted Chestnut trees. 15’ tall, probalbly not much longer to live, but one of these days one will! The Chestnut leaves overhead made us wish for the day when they’d make their return to our forests. It will happen I hope. We really lingered in the forest today. It was hard to imagine leaving when it was all so perfect and with pine needles and hardwood leaves gently falling all day long.. But leave we did, and we headed to Cushman’s Market where I had a very perfect BLT and lots of water. It’s hard to have days like this one come to an end. I hope you’re having some perfect days too. Love, Penny
