8/15/24 – One small section of Mount Tom, Sunderland MA

A bit of history and facts: From about 300-200 million years ago (late Paleozoic Era until the very late Triassic), the continent we now know as North America was contiguous with the continents ofAfrica, South America, and Europe. They all existed as a single continent called Pangea. They rifted apart during the late Triassic Period. Mount Tom, consisting of various volcanic rock, was formed when this rift occurred. The Connecticut River is the rift valley. Well, that’s the best I can do and with any luck at all it’s factual. I’ve included photos of the incredible rock formations that we walked along in awe and wonder. On a small ledge someone (not us) had placed an animal skull. Anyone know what it is ? Our best guess was some creature of the weasel family. It was about 3 1/2 inches long. We hiked up and around the formations so we could get to the top and there we were struck with the depth of many crevices, (and no one fell in:) It was up there that Tony’s name and the fun we always had with him was bandied about. A short drive back to the nice River Walk along the Connecticut River for bag lunches and spirited conversation. I would love to take you here! XOXO Penny
