11/14/24 – The Goatherd Trail in Dubuque Forest, Plainfield MA

We love hiking in the 7882 acre Dubuque Forest. Dubuque Forest stretches through the towns of Hawley, Savoy, Plainfield and Buckland MA.. We’ve wanted to hike its “Goatherd Trail” for a long time and today at last we did it. The trails were single file and uphill but with plenty of switchback trails to keep it from being just straight up and up. All together we covered about 4.1 miles.. It was a lot of fun and we kept moving along as the weather was pretty nippy – in the 40’s. A discovery of larva on the back of a piece of birch bark had us guessing about what creatures would eventually emerge. When at last we reached what we thought must be the Goatherd Rock it looked like all the other glacial erratics we’d seen along the way – until Joe went to the back of it and found it to be neatly split in two. A few 30 or so feet on there was another split rock that had interesting form as well as a ramp up into it for mountain biker excitement. Back down to the cars and off to Country Pie Pizza for pizza and veggie wraps and Bart’s ice cream cones (still $1.00 each hand scooped). Hiker Bob treats us to those cones!! Stay hopeful.
With love from Penny
