1/9/25 – Whately Woods Trails, Whately MA

Blustery winds of 17 mph with a temperature around 25 degrees set the scene for our 1.8 mile hike today. The trails here are very pretty. They also have plenty of mature trees to help slow down some of the wind gusts. Needle ice was plentiful. It’s something we always love finding. It forms when soil is above 32 degrees and air temperature is below 32 degrees causing columns of ice to rise up from the ground. And there’s plenty of water along these trails, as well as a favorite low place that we have named “The Whately Canyon”. A short mid day drive took us to “Wild Roots Eatery” where we thawed out and enjoyed the warmth. I had a pressed sandwich of grain bread, cheddar cheese, apple slices and arugla. Make yourself one!…it’s realy good! With thoughts of the tragedies in California, and with compassion and hope for everyone, Penny
