6/5/25 – High Ledges, Shelburne, MA

Early on in this very wonderful challenging long hike we found a perfect place for a group photo. Some climbed up, and some stood their ground. We saw what we believe to be Marsh Violet with its very long stems. So pretty! Trails were mostly narrow with a lot of climbs, tree roots, and small streams to cross. At last, after about 2 miles, we reached the beautiful clearing with views of Shelburne Falls below it and we took a lunch break. Smoke from the Canadian wild fires clouded the view a bit. But if you look in the middle of the long view photo (and are VERY familiar with the scene!!!!!) you have a chance to see Tara and Paul’s Buckland house up behind McCuskers Store by the bridge. (Have you found it yet???) In early June, High Ledges is a well know place to go to see Lady Slippers in bloom. There were very few today! The tree canopy is making much more shade and less sunlight is reaching the ground level than in former years. So it goes! On the trail back to our cars, memories of being with “the kids” at a small pond had me go off trail to take a photo of it. A small frog jumped into the water when I arrived and, of course, I wished the kids were with me again. June! Hooray! Penny Lady Borton is back from 3 onths in VIet Nam. She’s archiiving at UMass and she’ll be staying with me tonight!! {CAPTION}
