Thursday Hikers

Est. 2013

7/30/15 – Conway State Forest

Starting out from Cricket Hill, we passed headwaters of the Roaring Brook. I think Anna and Jason will like to see that photo, as Jason grew up on Roaring Brook Road in Conway. The trails that Tony and I had scoped out for the hike were suitable to the hot weather in the deep shade of the forest, and with only three uphill portions of trail. The fungi are starting to amuse us as they always do. We especially liked this very tall one. See Joe, Tony, and Gwen discussing Wednesday night’s Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) scoping hearing that was held in Greenfield Wednesday night. We are all of a mind that strongly opposes the fracked gas pipeline that is proposed to go from PA, through our part of Western Mass, NH, and out to the coast where 70% of it will be shipped overseas. Tony spoke at the FERC hearing, and on our hike found a suitable pulpit in an old decaying tree in which to expound even more. Gwen and the dogs found a split rock for some fun, dog treats were passed out freely, and a revolutionary War era cemetery held our quiet attention for a while. Over the Roaring Brook once again, past yet another Hen of the Woods (edible!) fungus, and on to the Conway Pond where we sat down very happily after our 5 mile hike, ate our bag lunches, shared some freshly picked raspberries, and all swam in the absolutely delightful and marvelous cool waters of the Conway Pond. Don’t forget to go for a swim sometime soon! Love, Penny *delayed due to my camera being left in Donna’s car.
