10/20/16 – Bear Swamp, Ashfield MA

We left cars at Bear Swamp and at Sanderson Academy, Ashfield’s public elementary school. Once on the school nature path, we passed a wonderful hut constructed by kids at the school. It’s encouraging to see the extent of marked nature trails the school has provided for the children. Leaving school property, we headed out onto the extensive Bear Swamp trails. Fallen leaves covered the paths, falling leaves were raining down, and the color in the tree canopy was just glorious. I’ve ruined my camera by dropping it into my kitchen sink full of water. So I borrowed a camera but was cautious with it. I tried using my new telephone as a camera too, with a little bit of success. Lunch was at Elmer’s Store where I had the grilled caramelized onion, cheddar cheese and apple sandwich on rye. And lots of ice water! We were a small band of 5 hikers today and look forward to next week when other hikers will return from being ill and others from various trips they are on. Many hellos are sent to you, Madge. Rain is in the forecast! I hope it will have an drenching effect on our prolonged drought. Love, Penny {CAPTION}
