Thursday Hikers

Est. 2013

5/11/17 – Shutesbury MA

Weather still a bit nippy, but the Thursday Hikers had another great, great day. We found the remains of what we reckoned to be an old CCC cabin. The remaining chimney was s nostalgic remnant. We walked up, up, and up! a power line for a while and, with no canopy, delighted in discovering lichens, and all kinds of plants that grew there as well having as a long view into Vermont. Back onto forested trails, we headed toward the Amherst Reservoir where Lady Slipper plants were at last appearing all along the trail. The first we’ve seen this year! We were also delighted to see some Rattlesnake Plantain growing between two rocks. After 4 miles of hiking, lunch at Cushman’s Cafe in Amherst was really welcome. I had a turkey sandwich with cranberry mayo on a nifty grain bread. The “Donatello” (!), a grilled sandwich, looked amazing and I’ll have it next time we’re there. I hope one of you has been declared the Queen of the May! (I seem to have been overlooked this year.) Oh well, Love, Penny {CAPTION}
