Thursday Hikers

Est. 2013

8/10/17 – Old Cricket Hill Road and the Conway Pond

Perfect weather for a summer hike. In the woods, the fungi have stolen the show from the wildflowers. Here’s a coral fungus and a gorgeous lavender blue mushroom and no, we didn’t pick and eat it. We stopped for a bit at the Maynard farm site, now just a cellar hole, and the Maynard cemetery with stones from the 1700s. I was moved to see that a soldier’s stone, way out there in the woods, is still given an American flag on Memorial Day. The February tornado had done extensive damage to the forest and Tony had marked a circuitous trail with yellow tape markers so we could get through and around the fallen and broken off trees. After about 3 1/2 hours of hiking along some old roads and many single file trails too, we came at last to the secluded pond and house of the Jeswalds: she a sculptor, he a writer. Then down down down and across the Conway Pond dam, over to the picnic tables, where we had a fabulous pot luck picnic, hand cranked vanilla ice cream which went on top of slices of blueberry pie that Tony had made from the blueberries we picked at Bensen Place.. Then, at last!, down to the pond where the swimming was so so so good We started out at 9:15 this morning and got home at 5:15 this afternoon. A good day with good friends just can’t be beat! Love, Penny
