Thursday Hikers

Est. 2013

2/8/18 – Fitzgerald Lake, Northampton MA

Fitzgerald Lake is a large man made lake on a 700 acre parcel. Years ago it was going to be developed as an upscale residential area until Massachusetts Clean Water Act was passed and the whole area went into land conservation. Lots of hikers, dog walkers, and families use it. The trails are very good, and well marked. We hiked for about 3 hours.Terrain is relatively flat with some nice ups and downs too. The weather was sunny, cold (28 degrees), and all vegetation was coated with a thin film of ice from yesterday’s storm.Too bad that my camera couldn’t capture the ice coatings, as they were delightfully pretty. We did snowshoe out on the lake, but didn’t want to test our luck, so didn’t go very far from shore. But coyotes and deer and a lone cross country skier had made good use of the lake as a highway. The dam at the far end of the lake was a fine place to stop for a while. There was even a nice bench for stopping and enjoying ourselves. Lunch was at River Valley Market, an organic food coop. From the hot table I had tasty macaroni and cheese (!!) and a sauté of broccoli rabe with garlic. Yummy! We are recovering very slowly from the Super Bowl loss up here in New England. Maybe your team won? Love from Penny ,{CAPTION}
