This is the 5th year we’ve celebrated Tony’s birthday at his land and house, and this year he celebrated his 85th birthday! It has turned out to be a day when we hike a little slower, get around to telling each other how lucky we are to have found one another, and wrap it all up with grass fed beef hamburgers from the Wheeler farm and potluck from everyone. Caroline Wheeler was going to join us, but one of the cows got tangled up with a porcupine, and she needed to be at the farm. Ferns, trees, jolly neighbors on the hayfield boundary in their unscreened “screened” building, Pyrola in bud, Tony’s yard turned into a parking lot, and field daisies in the fields! Tony wore his birthday crown like a king and, after blowing out the candles on his birthday cupcakes, gave a short and very moving little speech about our treasured friendships.
