Given the heatwave, Tony came up with a perfect 1 miler from Roarimg Brook Road back to the Whately Road through beautiful forested land and one huge hayfield belonging to the Boyden Farm. At the start we passed Ceil Antes (Jason’s sister) and Bill Haines home. We admired the outdoor bread oven built by Bill (a talented wood worker) as well as their peaceful home. The start of the walk was on the old Conway to Deerfield Road, long, long out of use but wonderful for hiking. Walking from the canopy of the woods into the big hayfield changed all perspectives. For a while we watched a red tail hawk being chased by smaller birds. Black raspberries are ripening, the shinleaf pyrola is blooming, and Tony remembered where he left his water bottle:)! After a perfect little hike in the heat we arrived at the Conway Pond where good eating and great swimming ended the day. Thunder rumbled overhead but someone with a radar on her cellphone assured us that the storm was over Greenfield. Her kids called out “Mom it’s thundering, should we get out of the water?” “No”, she yelled back, the storm is headed to Greenfield”. Ah! Technology! Now we can keep on swimming when the thunder rolls:) Lynn ducked behind a tree and played impromptu music on her flute. Today is Jack’s birthday so everybody please stand and sing the Happy Birthday song for him. (You sounded great!) Love you, Penny
