Steady rain, but temperature in upper 50s, so off we went. Bear Swamp is a place we love, especially in May when it teems with wildflowers. Today it pretty much just teemed with rain! But it was colorful, the woods smelled so good, the trails were interesting and varied, and spirits were high. That marked Ash Tree is already dead from Emerald Ash Borer damage. Many Ashes are being preemptively cut for harvest as it seems as if all are doomed. Others would say not to clear cut them but leave some in hopes that a few might be resistant. It sure is sad to see these wonderful trees in such distress. The day was pretty much about water coming down and water to tromp through. A Halloween ghoul caught in a tangle of roots certainly perked up Sukee’s attention! Come to think of it, might that be Tony playing a prank?? Off to Country Pie Pizza to dry off, eat corn chowder and slabs of pizza, and a blueberry pie for celebrating Conrad’s birthday. We sent him next door to Ashfield Hardware for a free birthday ice cream cone then all joined in the great fun of being in that store. It has EVERYTHING! More rain tomorrow. Good day to hunker with a book by a wood stove. To Phil and Ellie, thanks, and to all the Daleys – wow, didn’t we have a great time together at Massanutten! Let’s do it again. Happy month of November to you all, With love, Penny
