Thursday Hikers

Est. 2013

12/27/18 – Horse Mountain, West Hatfield MA

The trails on Horse Mountain are just being developed. Land conservation efforts by the Kestrel Land Trust, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and with trail work by the Williamsburg Trail Committee are all very exciting. Thursday hiker Gwen is an active member of the Williamsburg Trail Committee. She led us out on preliminary trails which ultimately led to the long distance views seen from “White Rock”. White Rock is occasionally painted white by students from the Valley below…..why? As I said, they’re students .……….. From White Rock the views into the Valley and as far NE as Mt. Monadnock and SW over to the undulating outline of the Holyoke Range (where we often hike.) were really wonderful. Nancy and Mary Ann searched and even found their tiny houses way off in the distance. We saw Mount Warner, looking like a small shark’s tooth, off in the distance. It’s on the “summit” of Mount Warner that we have hung banners for various political and other good (we’d say) causes. The hike in to White Rock is through land granted to the Cole family by the King of England in the 1700s. Wonderful rock formations are scattered through the woods. The woods are relatively open with stone walls throughout. We’re already hoping to snowshoe hike it as soon as possible. After the hike we went to Bread Euphoria for lunch. I had a panini sandwich with swiss cheese, spinach and apples on Peasant Wheat bread. Our friend Paul stopped in and there was a lot of talk of skiing. He’s heading to Banff with his daughter for a week of skiing in April. Sounds good!! It’s time to wish you all a very Happy New Year!! Love, Penny {CAPTION}
