Thursday Hikers

Est. 2013

12/19/19 – DAR Forest Goshen MA

Cold, 12 degrees, minus 6 degrees with wind chill. So, yes, Brrrrr. But once we got our spikes and mittens on, and got into the woods, it all came together and it all was really wonderful. By “all” I guess I mean the warmth of wearing good gear, the warmth that starts to come from within you once you get moving, winter sunlight, and the wonderful invisible warmth of friendship. We had so much fun together today! Tony decided he was up to hiking so we kept to well packed snowmobile trails for good footing for him. Using poles, he compensated for his balance problems. PT is definitely helping – so too is will, hard work, and good spirit. To see running water in the icy streams is so beautiful. It was a one dog hike today, although Sukee found many coyote trails that she followed, but only briefly. We knew she‘d choose her human family over joining a coyote pack! As we neared the lake we thought swimming on long hot summer days, but a sign warned us to not think about taking a plunge today. So Nancy took the first face plunge of the year instead (there were no signs forbidding that) and had a red tingling face for a quite while afterward. We wandered through 4H Camp Howe with its cabins and mess halls, volley ball nets still up, and a medical emergency cabin which was unstaffed….. so we didn’t check in:) Lunch and thawing out at the Creamery where I had the “When Pigs and Turkeys Fly” a combo of roast turkey, avocado, lettuce, bacon on nicely toasted ciabatta bread. We celebrated Tom’s birthday with a big chocolate chip “cookie” that Lissa had made. I hope that your Christmas memories of all those years ago help keep you warm. Love. Penny {CAPTION}
