Thursday Hikers

Est. 2013

1/7/21 – DAR State Forest, Cummington MA

(The first photo is there by mistake…..but hope you all had a Merry Christmas. )
At 32 degrees and with wind off the lake it was a nippy hike today, but it was also lots of fun. The lake had a lot of activities happening on it: ice fishing, ice skating, nordic skiing, hiking!, and an all day long event by “All Out Adventures”, an organization that offers year round adaptive outdoor sports to people with disabilities. Today was Vets and Brain Injury day. We know most of these fine folks. They do great work and we Thursday Hikers love to support them.
There are quite a few big areas that people had cleared to making smooth skating rinks on the great big lake. I enjoyed visiting with some of the skaters and wished I were skating too.
All the forest trails were icy and rutted but we all had spikes so the going was pretty good. We didn’t mind much when we got out on a nice flat snowy road though!
We built a fire in a fire pit, ate our lunches, and gave one another lovely small Christmas gifts. Good dog Annie made the rounds sitting on laps and warming up. We sang and laughed and told tales and searched for Joe’s hiking poles that eventually turned up in the back of Tony’s car….but how? …and all was well at last.
I hope all is well with you….let’s say perhaps “as well as can be anyway” these days. Stay nice and warm, Penny {CAPTION}
