Thursday Hikers

Est. 2013

4/8/21 – Beckett Granite Quarry, Beckett MA

Beckett granite quarry was in operation from 1860 until 1960. It supplied granite for monuments and structures all over the USA. It was Deb’s choice for her “birthday hike”and we all loved being back there again. When work at the quarry came to an end, trucks, all kinds of specialized equipment, structures of all sorts, and rusted rail lines that carried the granite were just left where they were. As if “the workers went out for lunch and never returned”. It is both a monumental and and ghostly site. In good memory of the Daley Excavating Company, I climbed aboard what turned out to be a “White” truck for a photo. It’s name was still on its rusted axels. Donna took a turn in a truck from an Ashphalt Company in far off “Phila.” The steep and deep quarry pond was a great spot for lunch. Engineer hiker Conrad gave me good lessons on how it all worked! We hiked some side trails that were convoluted and studded with all kinds, shapes and sizes of granite stones. Lunch included a big fruit salad for Deb’s birthday. All in all another wonderful Thursday out with friends! Are you accinated? I sure hope so! Lots of love, Penny
