Amazing day in every way imaginable: 42 degrees, no wind, sunny sky, trails clear of snow and ice, friends (that includes the dogs) in high good spirits, 2.7 miles. We came upon what will from now on be dubbed “The Whately Grand Canyon”. It was a wonderful sight and a real surprise. Deb, Lissa, and Nancy stopped to “embellish” a tree stump starting out with a very large crustose lichen that Lissa had found.
Looking at the map photo, we walked from from the parking lot, over the wetland boardwalks, up to the Big Loop Trail, and back down Big Loop and around to where it intersect with Small Loop Trail then back up it to Big Loop Trail (just to make the hike longer) and back down Big Loop, over the foot bridge and boardwalk to the Parking Lot.
Off to Smithsonian Chowder House where we ate outside on picnic tables and where I had a delicious! cup of “Award Winning Sea Food Chowder” Got any chocolate hearts left over?:) With love from Penny.
