Lady Slippers, Lasagna, and Lots of Rain
Today we thumbed our noses at the forecast and set out on Tony’s acreage in spite of the rain. Down through the lower pasture to walk along the swollen streams then back up and across Poland Road and into the woods where we followed the waterfalls to the top of the land. The Lady Slippers held on and were still gorgeous, the Polygala (Gay Wings) had suffered in the heavy rain and had lost their pretty little “wings”. Lynn noticed that we more or less had the full colors of the rainbow with our rain gear and we lined up for a rather formal hikers photo. She had also brought all the words to “Singing in the Rain” and that little meadow was witness to much laughing, cavorting, and belted out song. Then back to Tony’s house for the lasagna. Not just any old lasagna: Sue Daley’s lasagna frozen since WInter Camp!! It was absolutely perfect and everyone sends you high praise and many thanks Sue. On the side was a green salad, beet cole slaw, wedges of watermelon, and bread baked with locally grown wheat. As it was Tony’s 81st birthday today, Lissa had baked a rhubarb pie and I made cookies in the shape of dog biscuits. Joe brought vanilla ice cream and no hiker went home hungry. The dogs played rambunctiously, running around the big round table, vying for the stuffed squirrel, and only occasionally calling for a time out.. It was rather like like something out of Charles Dickens novel. Another really memorable time together. And just now the sun has come out! Penny
