8/21/14 – DAR Forest in Cummington

Because of a weather forecast for thunder storms, we cancelled our long awaited hiking / kayacking trip planned for Tulley Lake (an hour and a half from here). Rather we decided to stay closer to home and set out for the DAR Forest in Cummington. The predicted “occasional light rain” in our area soon became drenching downpours and we got mightily soaked but had a good time sloshing through. The trails became small rivers and the dogs, soaked to the skin, might have wondered if we’d lost our minds. Signals of late summer – leaves beginning to show signs of turning and the emergence of fungi- are beginning to make us aware of summer’s fading. After two hours of getting really soaked, we emerged back at the lake where we had hoped we might get in a swim. Instead, we elected to head to the shelter of Elmer’s store where we left the dogs snoozing in the cars as we wolfed down lots of hot tea, coffee, soup, zucchini/cheddar scones, black bean quesadillas, and some amazing cinnamon buns. Here’s to the reappearance the sun! Love, Penny
