Truth is it was more of a stroll than a hike, and it couldn’t have been better as we wandered for hours taking in what must have been the last vestiges of the Fall season. The weather shifted moods and temperatures; the vegetation along the century old Connecticut River dike; the vast fields of harvested potatoes and newly planted acres of spinach; the bird hunters with their dogs; our arrival (at last!) at the confluence of the Mill and Connecticut Rivers; the great fun of finding a bridge washed out and -like the children we often become – trying to find a way to ford it or scoot over it on fallen trees that spanned it; watching the hundreds of crows flying about and harassing hawks; arriving at Hill Cemetery where we discovered a body atop an old memorial structure! In time, it rose from the dead and delivered a Shakespearian monologue that led us to realize it was friend John, who happens to be a local actor of some note. Then back to Lynn’s house for her tasty lasagna and pot luck from everybody else. A perfect day with friends. (Don’t forget that awful chore with your clocks), Penny
